BIOGRAPHY
Michał Knot (b. 1987) is one of the most active saxophonists of his generation. As a member of Duo Aliada and the saxophone quintet Five Sax, as well as soloist and in other projects, he has played more than 500 concerts and recitals in 49 countries. He has performed on the stages of notable concert halls such as: Carnegie Hall, Berlin Konzerthaus, Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, National Philharmonic and Grand Theater in Warsaw, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Tonhalle in Zurich, Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg, Liederhalle in Stuttgart, Gasteig in Munich, Teatro del Lago in Frutillar (Chile), National Concert Hall in Taipei, Symphony Hills in Tokyo and the Cairo Opera House.
He is one of the few saxophonists in history to have had the honor of performing as a soloist in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein (2022). In addition, he also performed in this role with the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester in 2024. As an orchestra member, he has also worked with: National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, Sinfonia Varsovia, European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), Warsaw Saxophone Orchestra, Vienna Saxophonic Orchestra and ensemble PHACE.

He is a laureate of international competitions and winner of prestigious awards. In the 2021/2022 artistic season, as a member of the Duo Aliada ensemble, he was awarded the title of “Jeunesse Austria Artist of the Year,” which resulted in numerous concerts throughout the country. In addition, he won the Grand Prix award of the 12th Fidelio Wettbewerb in Vienna and won 3rd place in the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition (University of Michigan). In 2016, he was honored with the “Outstanding Pole in Austria” award from the “Teraz Polska” foundation. In 2015, he received an invitation to participate in the prestigious “New Austrian Sound Of Music 2016-2017” program, promoting leading musicians of the young generation in Austria. In 2013, he became a scholarship holder of the “Młoda Polska” program, awarded by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. He has received scholarships for artistic achievement from the Polish, Italian and Austrian governments.
Michał Knot has released five albums to date: “In Time” (2024, Azzurra Music), “Debut. Live” (2022, Chopin University Press), “East West” (2021, Hänssler Classic), “At the movies” (2015, Paladino) and “New colors of the past” (2015, Ars Produktion). The album “Debut. Live”, recorded with the Warsaw Saxophone Orchestra, won the “Fryderyk” award in the orchestral music category (2023). And the album “East West,” recorded with Duo Aliada, received nominations in two categories of the Opus Klassik plebiscite (2021) and was awarded the “Joker” prize by Pizzicato magazine. Recordings made by Michał Knot have received an excellent reception from international critics, receiving favorable reviews in such media sources as BR Klassik, Magazine Crescendo, ORF Ö1, SWR 2, Klassik Heute, Radio Klassik Wien and many others.
From 2020 to 2022, he worked as an assistant to Professor Paweł Gusnar in the saxophone class at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In addition, he has taught master classes and lectures at West Virginia University, Binghamton University, Seoul National University, Nanyang (Singapore) Academy of Fine Arts, Zurich University of Music (ZHdK), Krakow Academy of Music and at numerous saxophone festivals around the world. He has served as a juror at several saxophone competitions.
In 2023 Michał Knot began his adventure in composition, taking his first steps in this field. His three-part piece “Vicino” for saxophone, accordion and string orchestra was premiered by Duo Aliada and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester in February 2024, in Stuttgart.
In 2020, he founded the SAX PL Association and the Bielsko-Biala International Saxfest saxophone festival, of which he is the artistic director. In 2017-2018, he was the artistic director of the Jav Music Festival in Jaworzno.
He began his saxophone studies under the tutelage of Jerzy Sendecki (PSM Jaworzno) and Tomasz Gmyrek (ZPSM Bielsko-Biała). He completed his undergraduate studies at the Academy of Music in Cracow, in the class of Professor Andrzej Rzymkowski. In 2011, he graduated his master’s degree studies with distinction at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma (in the class of Prof. Enzo Filippetti). He finished the Vienna stage of his education with a master’s degree (with distinction) from the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien (class of Prof. Lars Mlekusch). He is currently pursuing a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Paweł Gusnar, at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Nagrania dokonane przez Michała Knota spotkały się z doskonałym przyjęciem międzynarodowej krytyki, otrzymując przychylne recenzje w takich źródłach jak m.in.: BR Klassik, Magazine Crescendo, ORF Ö1, SWR 2, Klassik Heute, Radio Klassik Wien i w wielu innych.
W latach 2020-2022 pracował jako asystent prof. Pawła Gusnara w klasie saksofonu Uniwersytetu Muzycznego Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie. Ponadto prowadził lekcje mistrzowskie oraz wykłady na Uniwersytecie West Virginia, Uniwersytecie Binghamton, Narodowym Uniwersytecie Seulskim, Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Nanyang (Singapur), Uniwersytecie Muzycznym w Zurychu (ZHdK), Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie oraz podczas licznych festiwali saksofonowych na całym świecie. Pełnił funkcję jurora wielu konkursów saksofonowych.
W 2023 r. Michał Knot rozpoczął swoją przygodę z kompozycją, stawiając pierwsze kroki w tej dziedzinie. Jego trzyczęściowy utwór “Vicino” na saksofon, akordeon i orkiestrę smyczkową został prawykonany przez Duo Aliada i Stuttgarter Kammerorchester w lutym 2024 r., w Sztuttgardzie.
W 2020 r. założył Stowarzyszenie SAX PL oraz festiwal saksofonowy Bielsko-Biała International Saxfest, którego jest dyrektorem artystycznym. W latach 2017-2018 był dyrektorem artystycznym Jav Music Festival w Jaworznie.
Naukę saksofonu rozpoczął pod okiem mgr. Jerzego Sendeckiego (PSM Jaworzno) oraz mgr. Tomasza Gmyrka (ZPSM Bielsko-Biała). Studia licencjackie ukończył na Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie, w klasie prof. Andrzeja Rzymkowskiego. W 2011 r. ukończył z wyróżnieniem studia magisterskie w Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma (klasa prof. Enzo Filippettiego). Natomiast wiedeński etap edukacji zakończył dyplomem magisterskim (z wyróżnieniem) na Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien (klasa prof. Larsa Mlekuscha). Aktualnie realizuje przewód doktorski pod okiem Prof. Pawła Gusnara, w Uniwersytecie Muzycznym Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie.
